Investigador Científico

Dr. Ignacio Santa-Regina is a Research Scientist at IRNA-CSIC in Salamanca. He graduated in Biology and received a PhD from Salamanca University. He has supervised several Ph.D. theses. His field of interest is within nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems, plant ecology, soil biogeochemistry and soil biology. Current work is revealing significant effects of plant community dynamics in late field succession and soil characteristics in Dehesa ecosystems (interaction, decomposition, production). He has participated in EU-funded projects on organic matter and physiological parameters of major relevance in the functioning of ecosystems. Also his research works are mainly based on screening of plant communities to determine their As and heavy metal accumulation capacity and assessment of their potential in phytoremediation of contaminated mining soils to reduce human health and ecotoxicological risks. He is performing research works on (1) arsenic and heavy metal uptake by native plant species in the abandoned mines of Salamanca, and (2) mechanisms of metal transport, hyperaccumulation, detoxification, and tolerance in plants.
