LIFE Mycorestore

INNOVATIVE USE OF MYCOLOGICAL RESOURCES FOR RESILIENT AND PRODUCTIVE MEDITERRANEAN FORESTS THREATENED BY CLIMATE CHANGE

Funding Entity: European Union. LIFE18 CCA / EN / 1110.

Project coordinator: Alvaro Peix Geldart.

Participants: Ignacio Santa-Regina Rodríguez, José Mariano Igual.

Duration: 01/07/2019 – 30/06/2023.

Summary:

LIFE MycoRestore seeks to use diverse mycological resources and forest management practices to add value and aid the biological resilience of forests in Spain, Italy and Portugal, generating new sources of income and ensuring the stability of forest ecosystem services while addressing the effects of climate change.

The objectives of this project are divided into three main blocks:

  1. MycoForestry: Establishing sustainable mycology and silviculture management practices for fire and drought resistant forests.
  2. MycoEconomy: Promote green jobs for people at risk of social exclusion, enabling them to replace low-value biomass production with high-value wood processing jobs and innovative mushroom production. In this block, a circular economy approach to mushroom and substrate production supply chains is also intended, stimulating rural economies.
  3. MycoControl: To provide a proof of concept on the use of natural myco-control products and native fungal species to reduce the presence of pests or pathogens in forests.
