The origin
1954
In February 1954, the CSIC created the Section of Agricultural Chemistry and Soil Fertility, attached to the Chair of Analytical Chemistry of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Salamanca. The Section was the initial nucleus of the Institute until its foundation as the Centro de Edafología y Biología Aplicada de Salamanca in 1957. Its first headquarters was the Chair of Analytical Chemistry, belonging to the Faculty of Chemical Sciences of the University, then located on the ground floor of the Palacio de Anaya.
First steps
1962
Among the IOATO’s publications are those dedicated to the Vegetation Map of Salamanca; Soils of the Provinces of Salamanca, Zamora and Ávila; climatological studies and the monographic series Temas de Divulgación, published in collaboration with the Diputación de Salamanca, which contains various titles on agricultural, environmental and ecological topics. The Centro de Edafología y Biología Aplicada publishes a report of its activity between 1957 and 1967, another between 1968 and 1972 and annual reports uninterruptedly up to the present day.

IRNASA is born
1988
In 1988, the Centre changed its structure to the current name of Instituto de Recursos Naturales y Agrobiología de Salamanca (Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Salamanca). The work of the Institute, the result of the teamwork of its research groups, is summarised in Memoirs and Yearbooks published uninterruptedly since its foundation. Among its lines of research are some traditional ones such as those related to soil chemistry and plant nutrition, praticulture, bioclimatology or animal parasitology, some of them maintained for decades with the necessary modifications according to the scientific evolution over the years.
New agreement
2015
In January 2015, the President of the Diputación de Salamanca, Mr Javier Iglesias, and the President of the CSIC, Mr Emilio Lora-Tamayo, signed an agreement on the free and temporary transfer of the land and buildings on which the IRNASA headquarters are located. The agreement was signed for a period of four years, extendable for a further four years, following the conclusion of the initial fifty-year cession agreement signed in 1965 when the Vicente Rodríguez Fabrés Foundation ceded the land to IOATO, now IRNASA, for the construction of its building and annexed installations. The Provincial Council and the CSIC expressed their desire to continue collaborating and that the IRNASA would remain in its current location beyond the period established in the present agreement.
