ANIMALARIO

The IRNASA Animal Facility is located in two buildings annexed to the main building of the Institute, each of approximately 80 m2, and in the Muñovela Experimental Farm.

This animal facility is dedicated to the maintenance of experimental animals, supporting the research carried out at the Institute in the following aspects:

  • MAINTENANCE OF BIOLOGICAL CYCLES OF SEVERAL PARASITES OF ANIMAL HEALTH IMPORTANCE.


    • Maintenance of the life cycle of Schistosoma bovis in lambs and hamsters.
    • Maintenance of rabbits for the feeding of ticks of the species Ornithodoros erraticus and O. moubata.
  • OBTAINING POLYCLONAL SERA.


    • Immunisation of rabbits and mice with various recombinant proteins to obtain specific polyclonal antisera.
  • TRIALS TO EVALUATE THE PROTECTIVE EFFICACY OF NEW DEWORMING VACCINES BASED ON RECOMBINANT ANTIGENS.


    • Rabbit vaccination trials to evaluate the protective efficacy of several recombinant proteins against O. erraticus and O. moubata.
  • EXPERIMENTAL INFECTIONS OF MICE AND HAMSTERS WITH ‘S. BOVIS’ FOR STUDIES ON THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE PARASITE AND THE HOST VASCULAR ENDOTHELIUM.
